Presenting Thematic Hikes and Programs for Effective Impact
NOTE: Registration for this program is currently open to NWPMNP Classes of 2024 and 2025 until October 15, 2025. On October 15, 2025 students in the current class of 2026 will be invited by email to register if there are any spots remaining.
Why It Matters: “You are an influencer for the environment, a changer of lives and a conduit between the natural world and society“. Craig Hensley, Texas Biologist
Presenter: Brian Bockhahn, NC State Parks Ranger & Education Specialist, & Maggie Miller (MN ’24), Park Superintendent at Hanging Rock State Park
Program Description: This will be an exposition of methods, exercises, and props to creatively connect people of all ages and stages to Nature in ways that enhance their understanding, lead them to care about its preservation, and become aware of their own possible role in that effort.
Both Maggie and Brian are highly credentialed and experienced in the art of Interpretation, and in teaching interpretive skills. You will have FUN with them, while learning the very serious and intentional art of interpretation. This will help in your future efforts to influence others to nurture nature. Brian led a similar program in the spring, to rave reviews. We’ve included photos from that workshop.
What to Expect / Bring:
Teaching will occur both inside the classroom and outside, weather permitting. BRING plenty of snacks, beverage(s), and lunch. Dress COMFORTABLY in layers, as appropriate for the weather. Wear sturdy hiking shoes. Rain poncho or jacket, just in case, though rain may keep us inside. Bring Hiking Poles if you normally use them, Binoculars (if you have them), Backpack; whatever items keep you comfortable, prepared, and engaged outdoors. Bring whatever you use to take notes.
You will likely be able to leave your car right there at the Visitors Center all day, so should have access to supplies if you prefer to leave them in your cargo area.
The Restrooms at the Visitors Center open at 9:00 am, the same time the class begins. We can hope they may be ready a tad early!
